The Travel Photographer Backup Workflow We Trust
A practical file safety routine for photographers working away from home with cards, portable SSDs, checksums, and cloud sync.
The best backup system is boring, repeatable, and easy to verify when you are tired. Travel makes every weak link louder: small hotel desks, slow Wi-Fi, full cards, and early call times.
Keep Three Copies
Keep the card untouched until the job is delivered, copy the files to a fast SSD, and mirror that SSD to a second drive or cloud folder when the connection allows.
Name Folders Before Import
Use a simple structure: date, location, assignment, and camera. Clean folders make rushed editing less painful.
Verify, Then Format
Use software that can verify copies or compare checksums. A file that appears in Finder or Explorer is not the same as a file you have verified.
Pack For Failure
Bring two short cables, one long cable, a card wallet, and a small pouch that never leaves your personal bag. The system only works if the parts stay together.
