The Peak Design Capture Clip solves a problem every outdoor photographer knows: how to keep a camera accessible without the neck strain of a strap or the inconvenience of stopping to unpack it. Attach it to any backpack strap or belt, and your camera is always at hand — secure, stable, and ready in seconds.
Key Specs
- Weight: 3 oz (84g) clip + 0.5 oz (14g) plate
- Material: Weatherproof, rust-resistant aluminum
- Load capacity: 200+ lbs (90+ kg)
- Arca-Swiss compatible plate with 4-way entry
- Safety lock on quick-release button
- Fits straps up to 2.5-3" wide, 0.87" thick
Installation
The Capture Clip uses either thumb screws (best for belts and thin straps) or hex screws (needed for thicker, padded backpack straps). Installation takes minutes, though wide or rigid straps may require pinching the foam to squeeze the clip on. Once mounted, the clip stays put — we never felt any concern about security, even on rugged trails.
Real-World Use
Getting the camera in and out becomes intuitive with practice. The 4-way entry plate means there's no wrong orientation — slide the camera in from any direction until you hear the click. For one-handed operation, face the quick-release button inward.
A bonus: the Capture Clip on your belt doubles as a stable lens-changing platform. Mount the camera vertically ("sideways"), and it holds perfectly in place while you swap glass.
Accessories
Pro Pad: Adds stability for heavier setups — recommended for DSLRs with pro zooms.
Lens Kit: Lets you carry spare lenses on your belt using the same clip system.
Bino Kit: Mounts binoculars for wildlife observation and hunting.
Limitations
The standard Arca-Swiss plate may not match your existing tripod plate — you'll need to carry the included hex wrench for swaps. Very thick or rigid backpack straps (especially multi-day hiking packs) were a tight fit even with the hex screws. Cameras remain exposed to the elements, so this isn't ideal for heavy rain without a cover.
Practical Tips
- Start with two hands until the motion becomes muscle memory; then transition to one-handed operation.
- For smaller primes, mount the camera vertically so the weight hangs downward for better stability.
- If your tripod uses a different plate system, leave the Capture Clip plate on permanently and use an adapter for the tripod.
FAQ
Q: Can the Capture Clip hold a heavy DSLR with a 70-200mm lens? Yes — it's rated for 200+ lbs. However, the Pro Pad accessory significantly improves comfort with heavier setups.
Q: Does it work with all tripod plates? The standard plate is Arca-Swiss compatible. Peak Design also sells a dual plate compatible with Manfrotto RC2.
Q: Will it scratch my camera? The rubberized backplate prevents scuffing. The metal clip contacts only the plate, not the camera body.
