In 2025, NASA astronauts will wear a contemporary iteration of the renowned white spacesuit during the Artemis III lunar mission. The space agency collaborated with Axiom Space to create an advanced suit that offers improved safety measures, greater flexibility, and cutting-edge gear. At the Moon 2 Mars Festival held recently, a prototype of the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) was unveiled.
According to a press release by the company, Axiom collaborated with NASA to enhance the suit and intends to supply a set of space-qualified training suits by the end of summer. The suit is aimed at equipping astronauts with cutting-edge abilities for space exploration as well as providing NASA with commercially developed human systems necessary for accessing, residing and operating on and around the Moon.
The spacesuit depicted in the picture is not the final version, but rather a covering layer used for the purpose of display, so as not to reveal its confidential design. Axiom has specified that lunar suits should be white in order to reflect heat and shield the wearer from extreme temperatures. NASA declared in an official statement that the latest AxEMU spacesuits offer advanced safety and technological functionalities, and are suitable for fittings for “at minimum” 90% of American men and women.
Artemis III is set to be the inaugural human exploration of the lunar South Pole featuring the first-ever woman and person of color in this historic space mission. Over fifty years have passed since the Apollo missions initially transported humans to the moon.
